Knights Sweep at Union
Barbourville, KY – The Lady Knights couldn’t have begun their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) stretch run in better fashion as they traveled to Union College and came home with the sweep.
Ashton Blackburn (14-6) pitched a gem as she threw a complete game, three-hit shutout (1-0) to claim the win in game one in what was the prototypical “pitcher’s duel”. Blackburn did not surrender a walk while striking out nine. For the Bulldogs, Megan Merritt held the Knights to just three hits as well in this tight contest.
KCU’s Emma Ball pushed in the winning run in the 2nd inning with a bases-loaded walk in what would be the game’s only score. Blackburn, Victoria Breckler, and Katelyn Pavey accounted for the Lady Knights three hits.
In Game 2, Caroline Donithan ran her record to, 8-7 as KCU won the second half of the doubleheader, 4-2. She gave up one earned run in 4.1 innings, striking out two and walking four. Donithan relinquished the circle to Blackburn, with one out in the fourth inning as she finished out the game giving up one earned run and striking out two Bulldogs. In doing so, she got her second save of the season.
KCU Softball travels to Reinhardt University on Friday for an AAC twin-bill with the Eagles. The games are set for 1 & 3 PM.
