Grayson, KY - The Lady Knights made their home opener of the 2024 season with a doubleheader against Midway. Game 1: Midway got an early 3-0 lead over the Lady Knights. KCU would respond in the bottom half of the first inning with a single by Kylie Mathes that scored Sarah Leyba. Midway extended their lead in the top of the second inning with a sacrifice bunt to make it 4-1.
KCU got back on the board again in the bottom of the third inning with a single by Kaytlin Leyvas that advanced Mathes to second and scored Leyba. Acie Prince then doubled advancing Leyvas to third and scored Mathes. Hannah Ison singled off a bunt advancing Prince to third and scored Leyvas to tie things up at 4.
Victoria Breckler tripled scoring both Ison and Prince. Ashton Blackburn grounded out to the shortstop but was able to bring in Breckler to put the Lady Knights up 7-4. In the bottom of the fifth inning Breckler doubled scoring Ison. Leyba singled but advanced to second on an error that scored Jaryn Holtsclaw and Savannah Watson. Mathes tripled scoring Leyba. Leyvas singled up the middle to score Mathes to put the Lady Knights ahead 12-4, which would be the final score of game 1.
Game 2: Midway got on the board first after scoring on a fielder's choice to bring in the first run in the top of the second inning. In the top of the third inning Midway extended their lead to 4-0. KCU bounced back in the bottom half of the inning with a Mathes single that scored Leyba and Watson. Leyvas singled to right field and scored Mathes to make this a one run game at 4-3.
Midway scored again in the top of the seventh inning to extend their lead back to 2 making it 5-3. KCU would have one more shot. Prince singled to right field advancing Mathes to third and scored Emma Fromm but it would not be enough. The Lady Knights fall 5-4 in game 2 to split the doubleheader.
The Lady Knights will be back in action on Saturday at 1:00 and 3:00 against CIU and the again on Sunday at 12:00 and 2:00 at Columbia College.
